Here’s a tip: Don't just think of what problem your membership can solve now, also think about what problem you will solve AFTER they have joined, what is the next thing they will need help with and the next and the next.
Do it right and continually be solving people’s next problem even before they consciously acknowledge it is a problem.
The easiest way to do that is to create a custom consumption path that feeds their needs & desires and makes them feel like the whole experience is custom curated for them. Think of it like an Apple unboxing experience that elevates this somewhat mundane chore to something people want to document & share with their circle.
Another way is to create a carrots & sticks mechanism that is so compelling that those who stay, comply and those who leave feel idiotic doing so.
Lastly, just like Apple has built a certain Prestige around its brand, you too can activate The Prestige switch in your buyer’s brain on an ongoing basis so that staying on and buying more makes them excited and elevates their social status.
Deploying the right recurring revenue system means that you know exactly why you are letting people pay you that small monthly charge and how it plays into your overall business strategy.
If you are selling a $3K+ offer, your membership site will give you the best quality, super primed buyers for that offer, so you should treat it as an FITD.
But if you don’t have a $3K offer, your strategy will be a bit more nuanced to get the most out of those members through retention & amplification.
For example, my membership site is an FITD, and it works beautifully to lead people to my higher priced offers (more than 50% of people in my membership site end up buying another offer and 30%+ end up buying more than one offer)

People join out of excitement, but they stay out of loyalty & habit.
The key is to engineer your retention & amplification strategy carefully by using the 7 human lures that make people stay on for years.
It’s important to remember that we don’t just want them to stay on, we also want them to benefit from their membership, we also want them to tell others about it, bring their friends and most importantly buy more of our products.
Apple is not only the first company to receive a trillion dollar valuation but also scores the highest when it comes to brand loyalty with 92% of iPhone users planing to stick with the brand when they upgrade to a new phone.
Every single step in the customer journey from unboxing to marketing is meant to delight the users & cultivate a sense of prestige.
Apple also consistently works on increasing their share of the user wallet (a key pillar of The More Model) so that once someone buys one product, they bring their loyal customers with them to buy more products.
You might be tempted to believe that Apple manages to do all this because of their size but every single cue, trigger & hack that Apple uses to get buyers, keep them for longer & makes them spend more is easily replicable in small businesses. It may not seem like Apple has a membership model but it does; in fact they are not even a tech company, they are a user acquisition & experience company.
You know how many monthly members amazon has? The same as the entire adult population of the entire US and adding a whopping $25 Billion to their bottomline just from the Prime subscription.
With one big mega massive push every year (Prime Day) and multiple mini pushes throughout the year, Amazon offers so many perks for Prime users that it would almost seem idiotic not to upgrade.
Not to mention that all the “perks” of Prime actually get people to spend MORE with Amazon, create a habitual spending pattern (with payment information saved) and allows them to create a custom consumption path for each user.
Amazon Prime strategy is easily replicable for most small businesses especially when ti comes to acquisition, onboarding & creating custom consumption paths
An average user on Netflix stays on for more than 50 months?
Here’s the secret of Netflix membership model:
1. Train people to see you as part of their daily lives so they get in the habit of YOU
2. Train people to consume what you have sold them by creating a custom consumption path
3. Embed yourself in all aspects of people’s life
4. Create content that people can relate to based on their circumstances, specific needs, previous choices & raised concerns
They also excel at capturing any cancellations as fast as possible using one or all of the win-back strategies such as, free trials, lower priced trials, lower priced offers & lower payment plans.
